Having structural balance is an important part of efficient pain free movement and function. There are a lot of good structural body workers out there, and I count myself among them. My 26 years experience as a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer, combined with PRRT (see below) and orthotic management allows me to restore balance to the body’s structure and address chronic problems that have been difficult to treat. At times, this combination is all that’s needed. But sometimes that’s not enough. Chronic musculoskeletal problems, chronic pain, and a myriad of other health related problems can often be caused by an Autonomic Nervous System that has gotten out of balance.
Restoring your body’s natural balance and function allows your body and your nervous system to work like they were designed to work. To move and function smoothly, efficiently, and with minimal pain. To heal and restore itself when tissues or systems are over stressed. To be at peace. Read the testimonials to see the life changing impact this work can have.
Most health professionals do not address the Autonomic Nervous System when dealing with chronic issues. I offer three unique services that help accomplish this task:
Associative Awareness Techniques (AAT)
AAT is a treatment technique aimed at chronic health problems. The science behind the techniques is fully explained by Dr. Robert C Scaer in his book “The Body Bears The Burden”.
Basically, AAT works by decreasing the body’s reactivity to past and present negative life events. This reactivity causes actual neurophysiological changes in the body. Changes that affect our health and healing. The techniques of AAT work to decrease and eliminate this over reactive state, allowing the body to operate like it was designed to.
Tension Releasing Exercises (TRE)
Developed by Dr. David Berceli, these exercises elicit neurogenic tremors in the human organism. These are the same tremors that all other mammals use to discharge stress and trauma. Mammals are designed to live through, learn from, and evolve from trauma. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t still be here as a species. Unfortunately, humans with our large neo-cortex do not usually allow ourselves to discharge this energy and it becomes locked in our bodies and energetic pathways, condemning us to holding onto this instead of learning and moving forward.
Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT)
Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT) is a hands-on treatment approach that has changed a lot of beliefs about pain and dysfunction. John Iams, a Physical Therapist out of California, developed the technique after nearly 4 decades of research. The theoretical basis of this approach is that certain primal muscle reflexes become activated when we are in pain or when we experience a traumatic event. This over stimulation of the reflexes maintains pain and keeps painful patterns active. The treatment of these reflexes is effective in treating about 80% of people with painful conditions.
Additional information on the theory of why we work with the Autonomic Nervous System can be found on Ashok Gupta’s website . He uses these theories to successfully treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. He has a great medical paper explaining his amygdala hypothesis and you can watch a 3 hour video course further explaining it. I have personally used his program and implement parts of it into my treatment methods.
